How we list
Where Larkabout's listings come from, how often we check them, how to correct one, and what the labels on listings and pictures mean.
Where listings come from
- Venues' own websites. Every day our crawler reads a batch of venue websites, the ones it read longest ago first, and picks up their events, opening details and closures. Theatres, arts centres and other venues with a full programme have their what's on pages read in full.
- Public listings. Also every day, we read council and town council event pages, local tourism and town centre listings, ticketing sites, football and rugby fixture lists, and lists we check by hand for the season, such as fireworks, markets and Christmas events.
- Venues and organisers. A venue or organiser who claims their page can add their own events, opening hours and photos.
The venues themselves come from OpenStreetMap and Overture Maps, which we read every week, and from the Food Standards Agency's register of food businesses. When a venue's own website says it has closed, it goes to a person to check.
How often we check
Event pages show when we last read the event's source (“Last checked 30 Oct 2026”). Venue pages show when we last checked the venue's what's on and when its details last changed. When an event disappears from a programme or listing we read, we take it down. Dates that have passed drop off on their own.
Events do change at short notice, and we can only be as current as the page we read. Check with the venue before you travel far.
What the labels mean
- From [source], checked [date]. We found it on a public page, such as the venue's own website or a council listing, and link to that page.
- Added by the organiser. The venue or organiser added it themselves, from a page they have claimed.
- Larkabout pick. Chosen by our editors as worth your time. Picks are never paid for, and no plan, boost or sponsorship can buy one.
- Boosted, Featured and Presented by. Paid placements. They are always labelled.
We never call something we found on a website “verified”. It says where it came from and when we looked.
Pictures
- From the venue, or From the organiser. A photo they uploaded to their own page.
- Image: [venue]. A picture from the venue's own website, linking to the page it came from.
- Photo: [name], [licence]. An openly licensed photo, such as one from Wikimedia Commons, credited to the person who took it.
- Illustrative. A picture of the kind of thing, from our own library. It is not that event or that venue.
How to correct a listing
- On any event page, use Report a problem: wrong date, cancelled, wrong place or anything else. It goes to the people who check listings.
- If it's your venue, claim your page. It's free, and you can then correct your details and add events yourself.
- Or email hello@larkabout.co.uk with the page's address and what's wrong.
